“Untitled Sculptur” 2008

8 x (4mx4m) painted walls.

The location is a former factory that now houses artists’ studios and a large project room (Factory of Art and Design, Copenhagen). Eight removable walls often used to create a showroom were painted black and white, then they were folded out/positioned after each other creating a kind of scale in the large factory space.

Press release
Factory of Art and Design / production hall

Factory of Art and Design is pleased to open a new art project by Jesper Carlsen. He has been invited to realize a new site oriented piece in the production hall, which relates to its physical frame.

Jesper Carlsen works across media such as animation, video, sound and installation. On a humorous level he works with everyday life situation and often with reference to nature and art. Carlsens art practice unfolds at once a conceptual and iconographic frame, where it seems to be build and deconstructed again with great subtleties.

With the project Untitled sculpture in the production hall Carlsen plays with the already existing elements in the space – the eight white walls (Showroom). To perform a non collected white cube as a sculpture, which plays with the already given architecture, is what Carlsen in terms of producing a new art project finds relevant.

He applies thereby through a directly use of the walls another scale in a period of time in the hall. This intervention could as well be seen in relation to the changeable and process oriented rhythm in the hall.

The folded out white cube will have, even though it is a simple intervention, directly confronting and insisting in the encapsulating space. The folded out eight walls are painted in black and white. That is to say every second wall is black and white. This produces a scale format, which is comparable with a big tape measure through the Factory. At the same time the work is connected to its original function – the white walls and the relationship to the space.

It is on this minimal and conceptual level that Carlsen’s intervention takes place.

The spatial situations, which Carlsen is creating, seem often as subtle displacements of ones daily perception. In that moment you may step shortly into a moment, in a situation, where it is possible to experience maybe slight different.

The curatorial vision of the Factory of Art and Design is to work actively and openly with the notion of exhibition making by giving art production other possibilities. The intention is to shape a contextual and conceptually site oriented program with different local and international artists.

The exhibition project is supported by the Danish Art Council.
